Focus mode

A door for one project. Unfinished, and off unless you turn it on.

Focus mode is unfinished, and it is off unless you turn it on. The switch is in Settings → General, where it says so: "Unfinished. A door for one project: what arrives from another waits until you come out." It starts off, and what is written here may change.

What it is: a door with a queue behind it, for one project. Nothing about that project leaves the screen — nothing is hidden while a focus is on — and no work stops. Lanes set to advance go on advancing, runs finish, agents on other projects keep going. Only the calling waits.

Going in

Once the setting is on and a project is open, a Focus button appears in the top bar with a length beside it: No end, 25 min, 50 min or 90 min. A timebox is offered, never imposed, and No end is the default.

Press Focus, or ⇧⌘F (Ctrl on Linux and Windows). While it is on the button reads Focus · 12 min, and · 3 outside when the door is holding something.

What waits, and what never does

Held: a notice from another project that arrives while the focus is on, and the system notification it would have sent.

Never held:

  • anything from the project you are in — that is the point of being in it;
  • a step with no undo, from anywhere, because that is where waiting costs the most;
  • the system notification for an agent asking permission, which is stopped until you answer;
  • a reminder, because its time was your own choice;
  • anything that arrived before the focus began, which was already on screen;
  • a notice whose project is unknown, since a summary grouped by project would file it under nothing.

What is held is not read and never dropped. It sits in the bell under Waiting for the end of the focus — see Notifications — and looking at it is not leaving the focus.

When a timebox runs out, the door opens and what was waiting rings. The focus itself stays on until you leave it.

Coming out

Press Focus again, or ⇧⌘F. Opening another project also ends it, without asking: a focus is on one project by definition.

Either way a summary follows — how long it lasted, how many runs finished and failed on this project, and what they cost — then what arrived meanwhile, grouped by project. Click one to go to its card, or press Done.
