The bell in the top bar is where devpit says the things it already knew and had nowhere to put: a run ended, an agent is waiting for you, a reminder went off, a card went past its date, a step with no undo was set off. Nothing is invented for it. While devpit's window is behind, the things that need you also reach the system's notifications — see Outside the window.
What rings it
| Kind | When | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| Agent | an agent stopped and is waiting for a person | "An agent is waiting on you" |
| Run | a step finished or failed on a card | "verify finished on “Fix login”" |
| Run | a card moved on, was sent back, is ready for a lane you have to move it into, or stopped moving because its chain went through too many lanes | "“Fix login” is ready for ship" |
| No undo | a step marked as having no undo was set off | "deploy started on “Fix login”" |
| Due | a card went past its due date | "“Fix login” is past its date" |
| Reminder | a card's date and time came — see Reminders | "“Fix login” is due" |
| Command | a terminal command that ran ten seconds or more ended while the devpit window was not in front | "npm run build finished" |
Nothing happens when a date passes, so devpit looks; everything else is written where it happened.
An agent waiting is heard through devpit's own status hooks, which reach only the agents devpit starts and can be switched off in Settings → Providers → Agent status hooks.
Reading them
The badge counts what is unread, up to 99+. Opening the panel marks nothing: a line is read when you click it — which takes you to the terminal it happened in, or else opens its card — or when you press Mark all read. Nothing is cleared on its own, because a list that empties itself is a list where the thing you meant to come back to is gone. The panel holds the most recent hundred.
Going to what needs you
⇧⌘N (Ctrl on Linux and Windows) goes to the thing that has been waiting longest for you, and opens its card. The order is the one somebody between five agents wants:
- an agent waiting on an answer, because it is stopped until you come;
- a step with no undo that fired;
- a run that ended.
Within a rank, what nobody has looked at comes first, and the older before the newer.
Outside the window
While devpit's window is not in front, a system notification says when a session starts waiting on you, asks permission for something, stops on an error, or finishes its turn, and when a reminder goes off. With devpit in front, the bell and the island say it instead.
Pause
Pause is for a meeting or a stretch of thought: no notifications, the island neither opens nor sounds, and a terminal's permission question goes straight to that terminal. Agents keep working, their news is still heard — so the bell is right when you come back — and reminders still go off.
Pause For 30 minutes, For an hour, Until tomorrow morning or Until I resume, from the status strip, from Settings → General → Pause, or Pause for an hour in the tray. Resume ends it early. It survives a restart.
While a focus is on
With Focus mode on, notices from other projects do not ring, and send no system notification. They wait in the same panel, under Waiting for the end of the focus, and looking at them neither marks them read nor ends the focus. A permission question and a reminder are not held back by a focus.
