devpit

The island

A capsule above your other windows: what every agent is doing, and the one waiting on you.

The island is a small capsule at the top of the screen, above your other windows. It shows what each session in devpit's terminals and chats is doing — the step it is on, like Edit invoice.ts or Run npm test — and opens all the way when one waits on you. It exists so you can work in another window and still know when an agent needs you.

It sees only what runs inside devpit: the terminals open in this devpit with an agent in front, and its chats. A terminal with only a shell in front is not on it.

Reading it

Size What it shows
Hidden Nothing. Hover the top of the screen to bring the pill back.
The pill devpit's face, the session's name, its question or the step it is on, and a dot per session.
Open Every session, with what it is doing now — Waiting on you, Thinking, a step, Done, Idle — and how long ago.

Click the pill to open it. Open one session for its last steps and a preview of the change, the file or the command, and, when it has one, its pull request and the state of its checks. Open terminal and Open chat bring devpit to the front on it.

It opens on its own when a session waits on you, and folds itself away when you move on: a thin bar counts down its last seconds. The pin keeps it open. Drag it to the screen you work on, and it stays there.

Answering from it

A terminal session's permission question opens the island with four buttons:

Button What it does
Allow Allows this once.
Always Allows, and keeps the rule the agent suggested. Shown only when the agent suggested one.
Deny Refuses it.
Answer in terminal Lets the terminal ask, as it would without devpit.

Unanswered, nothing is decided for you: the terminal asks as it always did. Coming back to devpit's window hands every held question back to its terminal too. A question with choices shows them as buttons, pressed in that terminal as you, and only once the screen still shows that question. A chat's question is answered here as well, and reaches the agent as yours.

Reply answers a terminal session in words without opening it: type, press Enter, and it is typed into that terminal as yours. It is refused when a shell, not the agent, is in front there.

While you read one session, a question from another waits as a badge — 2 waiting — rather than taking the island from you. Drop a file on a session and its path goes into the agent's prompt, unsent, for you to finish the message there.

Sounds and notifications

devpit's face changes with the mood, and a few sounds of its own mark a session waiting, asking, done or failed. The sound button on the island's header — Sounds on, Sounds off — switches them off; it has no row in Settings.

While devpit's window is behind, a system notification says when a session waits, fails or finishes. A focus holds back the ones from other projects; Pause holds back all of them.

How it is drawn

Desktop The island is
X11, macOS, Windows a window above every other
Wayland on KDE, Hyprland, Sway and most wlroots desktops a layer at the top of the screen, over the panel, when gtk-layer-shell is installed
GNOME, or Wayland without gtk-layer-shell a window that never takes focus, placed where the desktop puts it

The AppImage runs through XWayland, so there it is drawn as on X11. Settings → General says which of these it is on your desktop.

Switching it off

Settings → General → Island, under The island and being told. It is on by default. While it is hidden it costs nothing: no timer, no frame, no sound.

To quiet it for a while instead, use Pause — the island neither opens nor sounds, and a permission question goes straight to its terminal. See Notifications.
